BACKGROUND

Ema is a homicide detective for the Los Angeles Police Department. She hasn't been one for long -- a year tops --- and is in fact extraordinarily bitter about her job. Her longtime passion has actually been for forensic science, but she was "thrown into criminal affairs" after she failed her forensics exam. Add to that a strong dislike for her prosecutor partner, Klavier Gavin, and you have one seriously disgruntled detective. That isn't to say she doesn't do her job, because she does; she just spends a lot of extra time fuming and grumbling and munching on her Snackoos to vent her frustration.

(spoilers for case 1-5 (Rise from the Ashes) below:)

Ema's obsession with forensic science stems from an incident that occurred when she was fourteen. After being set upon by a serial killer and then witnessing the murder of the man who saved her, she was unable to verbally testify about what happened due to her trauma. A picture she tried to draw of the incident was also deemed unusable in court. The inadequacy she felt then birthed a resolution in her: she would become a forensic investigator so that she could fight crime with her testimonies, and the evidence she analyzed would create airtight cases.

PERSONALITY

Once a sunny, energetic, goal-driven teenager with a verve for science and learning, Ema at 25 has taken a turn for the dour. Having failed her forensics certification exam, she's had to "settle" for being a crime scene detective for the LAPD, and she often vents her frustration at failing to achieve her dream job – for the moment – on the people around her. She's quick to snap at nosy defense attorneys, chase trespassers off the scene, and aggressively munch on Snackoos to work off some steam. In her desperation to be the forensic investigator she's always wanted to be, she often (read: always) sneaks in unauthorized forensic equipment to further her investigations and gleefully collaborates with Apollo to test any and all trace evidence.

As a detective, Ema's work can seem lackluster. Apollo catches her regularly brooding and standing around, eating Snackoos, and she often complains about Klavier. However, she gets her work done and genuinely cares about her crime scenes and the truth. She won't hesitate to burst into a courtroom with the key to new evidence, and she can be dogged about contributing to a case if she feels she hasn't done enough. She's bitter about her job title, but at the end of the day, she's committed to convicting the right criminal.

Forensic investigation is Ema's ideal job, but in some ways, being a cop suits her temperament: she's aggressive about finding leads (scientifically) and giving orders, takes decisive action during emergencies, and is unafraid to charge into potential danger (e.g., that time she strolled into the middle of a bomb scare). She doesn't care overmuch for what people outside of her inner circle think of her, giving her license to be tough on the public when needed; she always carries two pairs of handcuffs, just in case. She seems to have the respect of the police who work under her – in part, perhaps, because they're afraid of her sharp tongue. Still, she isn't unshakable. She's often hard on herself when she feels that she's failed in her duties, and openly self-deprecating about it.

While dealing with Ema can feel like a battle, she can also be a fantastic ally. She's fiercely loyal to the people who have done right by her and devoted to the people she admires: her older sister Lana, Phoenix, and Edgeworth foremost among them. She will and has dropped everything in her life to help them, and she never forgets her debts. This is likely rooted in her being orphaned at a young age; she's deeply attached to Lana, who sacrificed much to raise her, and takes no aid for granted. She's even quick to express gratitude toward Apollo and Trucy whenever they help her find new details about a case, and returns the favor however she can despite them being the opposition.

She may not be a forensic investigator in name, but she's stolidly one in spirit. Mere mention of science or forensics can provoke a complete change in her attitude. She sparkles, as Trucy puts it, with childish excitement, and she becomes an instant co-conspirator to anyone interested in doing precious, precious science with her. Forensic science is her identity: she always wears a lab coat over her clothes (and has since she was a teen), splurges her spending money on forensic tools, and always has mysterious chemicals sticking out of her satchel. Even her pink-tinted glasses are a tool to help her see luminol reactions. She is knowledgeable about a wide range of forensic disciplines, and one would be hard-pressed to find anyone more passionate about forensics than she. Her weakness lies in the execution. She's clumsy, regularly knocking over and breaking the lamp on her work desk, and occasionally shows reservations over testing evidence in the field, prompting Apollo to do it in her stead.
